While studying winemaking at Stellenbosch University, the dream of starting my own wine brand began. After doing several harvests around South Africa, I headed to South America and that’s where Viento found me. After completing a harvest in Mendoza, Argentina, I finally found my inspiration in Patagonia, where I went to visit my family.
When I arrived they handed me a book called ‘En las tierras del viento’ meaning ‘In the lands of the wind.’
It was then that I knew - Viento Wine was meant to be. This book was about my family and many other South African families who fled to South America in the early 1900’s. While I was there I also visited the birthplace of my grandfather, Sarmiento, which I only later discovered means, the ‘vine shoot’.
When I arrived back in South Africa I felt a big part of myself still stuck ‘en las tierras del viento …’ in the lands of the wind. In the same way that a good wine needs to reflect the soil and the land that it’s from, so do I want to represent a little bit of where I’m from with Viento Wine.

Old bush vines planted in 1979 on Koffieklip soils in Wellington.
Winemaking:
Whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight. Naturally fermented and aged for 10 months on fine lees in a concrete egg. Filtered and bottled.
Tasting Notes:
Fresh, textural and true to old-vine Chenin character. Pure white stone fruit and fresh melon on the nose, underpinned by a subtle lees creaminess. The palate is calm and quietly confident, carried by well-integrated acidity and a clean, mineral finish. At its peak drinking window.
